ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Championing women-owned farms, and organic practices.

ASPROGUATE is a relatively young organization, having been founded in 2014 by 100 organic coffee growers in the Acatenango, Coban, and Chimaltenango regions. The members of ASPROGUATE set out with the express purpose of showing that growing coffee organically is not only better for the environment, but is more economically sustainable and leads to higher incomes. The majority of ASPROGUATE's farms are women-owned, and nearly all of ASPROGUATE's members are of indigenous Kaqchikel and Tz'utujil ethnicity. In 2016, ASPROGUATE opened a new headquarters in San Martín Jilotepeque.

Furthering sustainability.

ASPROGUATE has been met with great success and many producers have embraced their model of sustainable, traceable, and organic practices. The organization has grown quickly, adding over 300 new producer members in the last few years.

Ensuring quality through farmer education.

The leaders at ASPROGUATE are deeply committed to farmer education and training, and employ a team of agronomist technicians to work closely with their farmers. These technicians conduct trainings for farmers 14-16 times per year, much of it in support of FTO certifications. Technicians also deliver fertilizers to producers and collect cherries.

Acatenango, Guatemala

The Acatenango Valley sits at an altitude of around 2,000 masal. Constant eruptions from the nearby Fuego volcano keep the coarse, sandy soils full of minerals.

Owned and led by the farmers themselves.

Each year, ASPROGUATE holds one major assembly where 4-5 representatives from each community come together to vote on how to use their Fair Trade premium. Roughly 260 members vote during this assembly. The rest of the year, a board comprised of eight farmer representatives, cooperative leaders, and lead agronomists oversee ASPROGUATE's operations.

This unique model has helped ASPROGUATE scale its farmer training outreach, improving livelihoods and coffee quality.
