San Martin Jilotepeque

This lot is composed of Café Asproguate and Fuerza de Mujer. The incredibly fertile volcanic soil that this coffee was grown in allows for its stunning flavor expression in the cup: ripe and heady tropical fruit, clean and lingering sweetness, and a syrupy body.

Fuerza de Mujer is a women's group formed by women whose husbands left migrated to the US to work as day laborers. These women decided to take up coffee producing as their new livelihood.

The women of Fuerza de Mujer are methodical and process-driven, and the care that they have taken with their coffee is evident in the cup. Fragrant notes of orange blossom are accented by sweet citrus and chocolate.

The majority of ASPROGUATE's farms are women-owned, and nearly all of ASPROGUATE's members are of indigenous Kaqchikel and Tz'utujil ethnicity. In 2016, ASPROGUATE opened a new headquarters in San Martín Jilotepeque.

Furthering sustainability.

ASPROGUATE has been met with great success and many producers have embraced their model of sustainable, traceable, and organic practices. The organization has grown quickly, adding over 300 new producer members in the last few years.

Ensuring quality through farmer education.

The leaders at ASPROGUATE are deeply committed to farmer education and training, and employ a team of agronomist technicians to work closely with their farmers. These technicians conduct trainings for farmers 14-16 times per year, much of it in support of FTO certifications. Technicians also deliver fertilizers to producers and collect cherries.

Roughly 260 members vote during this assembly. The rest of the year, a board comprised of eight farmer representatives, cooperative leaders, and lead agronomists oversee ASPROGUATE's operations.
